SUMMARY:Our Growing Edge: Centering Prayer as a Practice of Surrender
DESCRIPTION:“Look well to the growing edge. All around us worlds are dying and new worlds are being born; all around us life is dying and life is being born. The fruit ripens on the tree\, the roots are silently at work in the darkness of the earth against a time when there shall be new leaves\, fresh blossoms\, green fruit. Such is the growing edge.”  Howard Thurman\,  20th century American Baptist minister and mentor to Martin Luther King Jr\, \nWe’ll explore our growing edge through the practice of Centering Prayer. The weekend will welcome those new to Centering Prayer and those with more experience. It will include introductory talks\, time for reflection and sharing\, and\, above all\, practice. \nLed by Quakers Rosemary Field and Dana Littlepage Smith. \nGlenthorne is a Quaker centre and guest house in Grasmere\, popular with those of all denominations and none\, and a great place to add on a few days’ holiday to explore the Lake District. \nFor more information and booking contact Glenthorne  015394 35389 or info@glenthorne.org \n

SUMMARY:Resting in Presence: An Intensive Journey into Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Led by Jill Benet  \nThis eight-day intensive retreat provides a profound opportunity to deepen your practice of Centering Prayer within a small community committed to silence\, solitude\, and presence. Rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition and inspired by the teachings of Fr. Thomas Keating\, the retreat invites participants to rest in an environment\, of prayer\, silence\, and transformation\nIntensive retreats provide the space to settle deeply into the contemplative life. There will be extended periods of Centering Prayer\, as well as teaching input\, Lectio Divina\, and Contemplative Liturgy. Time outside of group sessions will be held in silence\, with ample opportunity for personal reflection\, rest\, creative activities or walking in nature. Whether you’re seeking to deepen your practice or to make space to listen more fully to the quiet voice within\, this retreat invites you to open to the Divine—not through effort\, but through presence. \n________________________________________\nRetreat Highlights:\n•    Extended sessions of Centering Prayer three times daily\n•    Teachings on key themes such as consent\, inner transformation\, and presence.\n•    Reflections drawn from the work of Fr. Thomas Keating and other contemplative voices\n•    Practices including Lectio Divina and Contemplative Liturgy\n•    Optional support in Inner Relationship Focusing\, a gentle method of inner listening\n•    A sustained rhythm of deep silence to support inner stillness\n•    One-to-one meetings with Jill Benet\n•    Optional group sharing in a respectful\, confidential space\n________________________________________ \nThis retreat is suitable for those with an established Centering Prayer practice\, and who have ideally attended an Introductory Workshop. \nJill has been part of Contemplative Outreach for many years and studied under its founder\, Fr. Thomas Keating. She co-founded Silence in the City\, a series of talks exploring the contemplative life\, and has worked with teachers including Cynthia Bourgeault\, James Finley\, and Richard Rohr. She leads Centering Prayer groups\, Introductory Days\, Quiet Days\, and retreats. Jill is also a trained teacher and guide in Inner Relationship Focusing\, a practice of deep inner listening. She finds renewal in painting and walking among trees. Her work is rooted in the belief that prayer and creativity are not separate from life — they are ways of living it more fully.

SUMMARY:Gathered in Silence - a Quiet Day for Those Already Formed in Silence
DESCRIPTION:This retreat is designed specifically for established Christian meditators and contemplatives—those already accustomed to spending periods in silent prayer or meditative practice each day. \nIf silence is your home ground\, your place of nourishment and transformation\, this day offers a rare opportunity: extensive quiet held in the company of others\, deepening our sense of unity\, oneness\, and shared connection. \nThe day will be particularly useful for those who practise Centering Prayer or Christian Meditation (WCCM). \nTogether we will rest in the spacious silence that becomes possible when we gather with a shared intention of openness to the presence of God. \nOur retreat takes place aboard CYE’s vessel\, TS Resolute\, moored on the edge of Chichester Harbour—a location known for its thin-place quality. With its chapel\, quiet spaces\, and ever-changing waters\, the environment invites a natural attentiveness to the Divine within and around us. \nPractically…\n\nAccess to TS Resolute and the chapel requires use of a steep ramp and a flight of steps. Please ensure this is manageable for you before booking.\nNovember can be cold: please dress in layers; the ship may be cooler than a home environment. Please wear carpet slippers on Resolute.\nBring anything that supports your practice (journal\, rug\, cushion\, prayer stool).\nA simple lunch is provided\, hot drinks and water are available throughout the day. If you require gluten free and dairy free food please request in advance from CYE.\n\nBooking\nBooking via CYE Website: https://www.cye.org.uk/explore-book/event-calendar. Use the words Sunday Quiet Day in the Event Calendar search box and enter by selecting the tick. Select the Quiet Day & follow instructions. \nBooking queries (payments\, logistics\, dietary needs):  Email: admin@cye.org.uk  Phone: 01243 573375 9am-1pm & 2pm-5pm with voicemail out of hours. \nProgramme queries:\nPeter Bone\, Sussex co-ordinator for Contemplative Outreach\nE: sussex@contemplativeoutreach.org.uk \nFor more information and programme  please see the flyer  CYE day retreat flyer 15 Nov 2026
